20. A Doofus Follower

This past summer we discovered a smartphone app that followed the stars, planets, and constellations in the sky. It has to be one of the coolest new experiences. It is so fun to play with and really brings to life the flat graphics of education in the past. As I move my phone, I can see the names of everything and the lines of the constellations so I can make them out in the sky before me. If I move the phone to point towards the ground, I can see the sky on the other side of the world! Now it makes sense to me why I cannot always see the big dipper! I am in awe as I follow my phone around! I’m sure I look like a doofus, but I do not really care.
A famous journey is that of the wise men following the star as it went ahead of them. “And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was” Matthew 2:9b. I know when I travel the horizon always seems to move, so I can imagine the star moving ahead of them in the same way. “They looked up and saw a star shining in the east, beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night” (The First Noel). It must have been a long journey for the star to be shining in the day as well.
Today I have no need to follow a star to find Jesus. Jesus is right here with me. Jesus is the star! He is the light that shines both day and night! He is the great light! Jesus is the star that guides me. I am in awe! Am I following Him? Do I set my eyes on Him and take steps toward Him? I sure do try. I’m sure I look like a doofus sometimes, but I do not really care what others think!
