Let God Know How You Feel When you Pray

O God, break the teeth in their mouths;

tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!

Let them vanish like water that runs away;

like grass let them be trodden down and wither.

Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime;

like the untimely birth that never sees the sun. (Psalm 58:6-8)

Now that psalmist was mad, and he did not try to hide it . . . .

Too often you have been warned against presenting yourself to God just as you are. You are taught early a conventional dishonesty with God, such as, "When you pray, put a smile on your face. Be nice. You might offend God. Don't let God know how you really feel." The psalmists insist that if you really want to have an intimate relationship with God, then come to the relationship as you are. Do not wear a mask. God can handle you without any cosmetics.
